2. When does the Equality Act 2010 come into force?

The requirements of the Act relating to all protected characteristics, with the exception of age, come into force on 01 October 2010. The government has decided not to introduce the requirements relating to the protected characteristic of age at this time. There will be government consultation on this aspect in the Autumn 2010, with a view to bringing the requirements into effect with regard to age in 2012.

No transitional arrangements are in place. Clubs must therefore comply by 01 October 2010 in relation to all protected characteristics other than age. We recommend that the implications of the inclusion of age within the legal controls should be considered by clubs now, to enable consultation with members, transitional arrangements and other actions which will ensure a smooth transition.
